Maybe it is taking you longer to get projects done than others, or people in your life are frustrated when tasks don't get finished or you don't follow through on your promises. You may be distracted easily, or feel completely overwhelmed by the many items on your to-do list that you avoid them all. Perhaps you believe you are lazy and unable to decide where to start.
Whatever it is that you are experiencing, you are beginning to notice the impact in every facet of your life:
Struggling to stay focused on tasks and be productive at work
Feeling bored easily and seeking fun and excitement constantly
Unrealistic about how long things will take to get done and then leaving tasks unfinished as a result
Feeling guilty in your relationships and believing that you are letting others down
It may feel impossible now, but you can feel focused and valuable. You can create tools that actually work for you to keep you organized and on track. You can feel productive and inspired by your life. And I can help you get there.
Therapy for Adult ADHD helps you do several things:
Identify the ADHD symptoms and ADHD strengths that are most impacting you
Understand what strategies and tools work best for your brain and your lifestyle
Practice new skills for engaging with your environment that support you, so you can feel positive about yourself and your life
I will help you through this process, tailoring each step to your unique needs and circumstances. My approach to therapy for adult ADHD comes from a place of hope and positivity: believing that you have amazing qualities that you deserve to feel good about, and it is simply about finding the tools that will work for you.
Q: What are therapy sessions for adult ADHD like?
A: Therapy sessions will involve you telling me your ADHD story: how and when you were diagnosed, what your diagnosis has meant to you during your life, and how your symptoms are impacting your life now. My goal is to help you understand your ADHD diagnosis so we can create specific coping skills and tools that fit your life. We will work on time management skills, learn to prioritize tasks, and develop a system for making decisions in your life. We will practice these skills in session by talking about recent examples in your life and anticipating potential obstacles.
Q: How does online therapy work?
A: Online therapy works similarly to in-person therapy except that you get to be in your own comfortable space for the session and you don't have to worry about traffic getting to the office! Before each session you will receive a Google Meet video link that is your unique link to click on for our session. You can click on this link prior to our session to make sure that your phone or computer has audio and video that is working. Having a quiet and private space to have your therapy session is important so that you will feel comfortable.
Q: How will I know if therapy for adult ADHD is working for me?
A: Therapy is work and there is no easy, quick fix to healing. Therapy is your time and is about what you want to get out of it. We will work together to create a plan that aligns with your goals and lifestyle. I am always ready to hear how you feel therapy is going and we can make adjustments to our goals and strategies whenever we need to. You can also ask yourself these questions: Am I understanding more about my ADHD and how it affects me? Am I able to make decisions in my life with greater confidence? Do I have tools and strategies that I like that working for my life?
Q: Will I have homework after sessions?
A: That depends on what works best for you. Some people enjoy having accountability that comes with specific homework assignments and if that is the case then we will incorporate it into our plans. Homework is not a requirement though and it is not something I will push on you if it is not your style. However, we will focus on making change in your life outside of therapy by creating behavioral strategies and coping skills that you can practice as much as you like. I want you to always feel that you are leaving therapy sessions with a plan for your next steps.
Q: How much do sessions cost?
A: My fees are $195 for a 45-minute individual therapy session. I am not in-network with any insurance company and therefore I collect the full session fee at the beginning of each session.
Q: How do I get started?
A: Contact me at johanna@trocounseling.com and I will email you times for a free, 15-minute video consultation this week! In the free consultation I will answer all of your questions about my therapy style, I will ask you about your therapy needs, and we will determine whether I am a good fit for you. After that, we can move forward with setting up an initial therapy appointment, usually in the next week.
